Connecting creative people with practical mobility needs
ENVO launched Next Move to invite fresh thinking about sustainable personal transportation. The brief explored mobility across city travel, outdoor recreation and specialist uses, asking participants to combine creativity with practical feasibility.
Alan Tam’s NEXT-GEN concept won the Gold Prize. Its modular electric vehicle architecture connected with ideas already developing within ENVO: a shared foundation that could adapt to different needs. Alan later joined the team, bringing industrial design into the engineering effort that became an important step on the journey toward UPT, the Utility Personal Transporter.

How concepts were assessed
The original scoring system considered context of use, form factor, performance and constraints, technological feasibility, simplicity, social awareness, sustainability and business viability. The evaluation connected the proposed vehicle with its user, operating environment and potential market.

Final jurors online discussion
Our expert panel of jurors completed a comprehensive group video conference, closely examining each submission for the 2022 Next Move global design competition. After careful consideration, they identified the top 10 designs based on the published criteria, before the final three winners were announced on April 15, 2023.

The original prize structure
The 2022–23 edition offered a total prize pool of CAD $15,000+. The three winners received CAD $5,000 (Gold), CAD $3,000 (Silver) and CAD $2,000 (Bronze).
ENVO also offered a separate $5,000 Golden Buzzer Fund. Out of the first 50 submissions, ENVO could select one idea and allocate a CAD $5,000 fund to develop a prototype jointly with the designer, under a partnership agreement clarifying their rights and benefits.

The original challenge
The first brief invited proposals for snow mobility, water mobility, an all-terrain electric platform, weather-protected electric bikes or trikes, and other future micro-mobility applications. Participants submitted a landscape B2 concept board with a short explanation, and selected entries received development guidance before the final jury evaluation.
These historical conditions applied to the completed 2022–23 contest, which excluded Québec residents. That exclusion is historical and does not carry over to the 2026–27 edition, which has its own participation conditions.
