We all want to have long healthy lives and perhaps an ebike can be the solution for a healthier generation. The City of Nelson recently implemented a program that allows city employees to purchase ebikes at an affordable, prorated cost in an attempt to promote healthy lifestyles. Hopefully, Nelson’s vision will provide an example for other employers to follow.
Ebikes are a hot commodity in highly populated and congested areas and are used to increase accessibility. Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to obtain ebikes immediately on their own dime. The City of Nelson’s proactive approach not only shows us how employers can help alleviate cost as a barrier but also illustrates how incentivizing ebikes can potentially uplift a community through positive and accessible physical activity for all ages.
Adults are primed to dominate the ebike scene, parents and guardians who opt into this new mode of transportation can impose an important impression on the next generation. Our environment informs the facts of life, especially for our little ones. Children who regularly engage with rigorous-to-moderate physical activity early in life are less likely to become obese and more likely to maintain a healthier lifestyle into adulthood. Exposure to a world where ebikes are a normalized mode of transportation can allow youth to habituate a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle.
