Many national, provincial, state, and city parks and trails allow Class 1 e-bikes but restrict throttle-equipped Class 2 e-bikes. For riders who own a Class 2 bike, that raises a practical question: can you convert it to Class 1 operation for the ride, then switch back afterward?
For ENVO riders, the answer is straightforward. All ENVO e-bikes with a throttle are designed so the throttle can be electrically disconnected, allowing the bike to operate through pedal assist only. Disconnect the throttle at its waterproof connector, confirm it can no longer run the motor, and keep it disconnected for the entire time you are in the Class 1-only area.
Class 1 vs. Class 2: What's the Difference?
The core distinction between the two classes is how the motor is activated.
Provides motor assistance only while the rider is pedaling.
Can also use a throttle to propel the bicycle without pedaling.
For park and trail access, the throttle is often the deciding factor. It is not always the only one. Class 1 definitions can also include limits on motor power and assisted speed, and individual parks can set their own access rules. Always check the requirements for the specific park or trail before you ride.
How to Make Your ENVO Pedal-Assist Only
The process takes a few minutes and does not require removing any hardware from the handlebar.
Switch your ENVO e-bike off before disconnecting any electrical connector.
Follow the cable from the throttle on the handlebar to its waterproof electrical connector. Make sure you have identified the throttle connector correctly before going further.
Hold the connector bodies, not the wires, and carefully separate the waterproof throttle connector. The throttle can stay mounted on the handlebar. Once it is electrically disconnected, it can no longer command the motor.
Without pedaling, operate the throttle. The motor should not run. Then pedal and confirm that pedal assist works normally. Also confirm that the brakes and brake motor cut-off switches remain functional.
Maintain this configuration for the entire time you are riding in an area that requires Class 1 or pedal-assist-only operation.
Once you are back where Class 2 operation is permitted, turn the bike off, reconnect the waterproof throttle connector, turn the bike on, and test the throttle.
Do not disconnect the brake cut-off switches or any other electrical connector. The brake motor cut-off switches must stay connected and working while you ride in pedal-assist-only mode.

Does Disconnecting the Throttle Make It Class 1?
Disconnecting the throttle addresses the central operational difference between a throttle-equipped Class 2 e-bike and pedal-assist-only Class 1 operation. On ENVO e-bikes, the disconnectable throttle makes that change simple to carry out and simple to reverse.
Throttle configuration is still not the only requirement everywhere. Depending on the jurisdiction, Class 1 or pedal-assist rules may also specify:
- Maximum motor power
- Maximum assisted speed
- Equipment requirements
- Where e-bikes are permitted to ride
In Canada and the United States, park and trail rules can vary by jurisdiction and by individual park. A bike that qualifies in one location may not automatically qualify in another.
Checklist Before Entering a Class 1 Park or Trail
- Throttle is disconnected
- Throttle cannot operate the motor
- Pedal assist works normally
- Brake cut-off switches remain connected and functional
- Motor assistance and speed settings meet the local requirement
- The specific park or trail permits Class 1 or pedal-assist e-bikes
