IKEA and ENVO obviously live in very different worlds. One sells furniture. The other builds electric mobility products.
But the more I look at IKEA's story, the more I see a lesson that matters to us.
IKEA did not become successful because it invented a better table or chair. It became successful because it challenged the whole system around furniture: how it was designed, manufactured, packed, shipped, displayed, sold, carried home and assembled.
That changed the economics of the industry.
And in a very different way, I think ENVO is trying to do something similar with mobility.
From e-bikes to right-sized mobility
ENVO started with electric bicycles, but for me the bigger idea was always about using the right machine for the job.
Transportation has become strangely oversized.
We often move one person with a vehicle designed for five. We use pickup trucks for small loads, large utility vehicles for simple maintenance jobs, and heavy recreational machines in places where something much lighter could work just as well.
Cars, trucks and larger machines absolutely have their place. The problem is that we have treated them as the default solution for almost everything.
ENVO has gradually moved in another direction: right-sized mobility.
That is why our products have expanded beyond conventional e-bikes.
A lightweight bike can solve a commute.
A U50 can move children, groceries or cargo.
Veemo adds weather protection without becoming a car.
MoonBike brings electric mobility into snow recreation.
UPT goes further, addressing commercial jobs that often fall awkwardly between a golf cart, ATV and full-size vehicle.
They look very different, but they come from the same thinking: build enough vehicle to do the job well, without automatically adding more size, weight, energy and complexity.
The IKEA lesson is not flat-pack. It is the system.
Flat-pack furniture is the obvious part of IKEA's story, but it was never just about putting a table into a smaller box.
The real advantage came from everything working together.
A product designed for efficient manufacturing could also pack efficiently. That reduced warehouse space and shipping cost. Customers could carry it home themselves. Self-service stores became practical. Lower operating costs supported lower prices.
Each decision reinforced the others.
That is the part I find most relevant to ENVO.
For a technology company, it is very easy to keep inventing separate products. Every new opportunity can become another frame, another battery, another controller, another charger, another supplier and another parts inventory.
Eventually innovation can create complexity faster than it creates value.
The better direction is almost the opposite:
We have already learned this with our e-bikes. Different models can serve very different riders while sharing batteries, chargers and core technical systems.
I see the benefit even at home. I have several ENVO bikes for commuting, taking my son to school, family rides and mountain biking, but we do not need a separate battery and charger ecosystem for every bike.
That simplicity matters much more as a company grows.
UPT may be the clearest expression of this idea
Commercial mobility has lived with a compromise for decades.
Golf carts and ATVs became affordable because recreational markets gave manufacturers enough volume to mass-produce them. Later, farms, resorts, campuses, airports and industrial operators adapted those vehicles for work.
Often they were not the ideal tools. They were simply the affordable tools available.
A purpose-built vehicle might fit the job better, but low-volume custom vehicle development is expensive.
UPT is our attempt to change that equation.
Instead of creating a new vehicle for every application, we can standardize the expensive foundation, the chassis, propulsion, controls, batteries and major systems, and allow the upper structure and configuration to adapt to the job.
The airport vehicle, farm vehicle and cargo vehicle can look and behave differently while sharing much of the same engineering underneath.
That is where the IKEA comparison becomes especially interesting.
The customer gets variety. The manufacturer keeps commonality. And commonality is what eventually allows customization to become commercially affordable.
Where ENVO is very different
Transportation is much harder than furniture.
A chair does not need braking validation, battery certification, steering systems, vehicle regulations, diagnostics or trained service support.
Our customers are also more diverse.
A rider wants comfort, reliability and enjoyment.
A dealer needs margin, parts availability and products that are straightforward to service.
A commercial fleet manager cares about uptime, safety, productivity and total cost of ownership.
So the ENVO system cannot simply be a manufacturing platform. It also has to connect engineering, compliance, distribution, dealers, parts and service.
And because we started in Canada, scaling brings another layer of complexity. North America alone combines huge distances with different regulations and customer behaviours. Europe adds another regulatory structure. Commercial applications introduce even more variation.
Our challenge is therefore not to make every product identical.
It is to create standardization underneath and flexibility where the customer actually needs it.
IKEA also reminds me of one of my own weaknesses
Ingvar Kamprad was famous for thinking about cost, efficiency and simplification.
My natural tendency is different.
I enjoy looking at a problem and imagining another way to solve it. That instinct has played a role in many ENVO products, but it can also create too many possibilities.
As ENVO grows, invention alone is not enough.
We need the discipline to decide which ideas deserve a product, which products should share a platform, and where complexity is creating more cost than customer value.
The goal cannot be to build the largest collection of electric vehicles.
It should be to solve more mobility problems with fewer, better underlying systems.
That is a very different measure of innovation.
Building an ecosystem, not a catalogue
Over time, I would like more of the ENVO world to connect.
Common batteries where appropriate.
Common electronics and controls.
Shared chargers, diagnostics, components and service knowledge.
Stronger supplier commonality.
A dealer and service network that can support multiple ENVO products without having to learn a completely different system every time.
That creates benefits far beyond manufacturing cost.
Ownership becomes easier for customers. Dealers can service products faster. Spare-parts inventories become more manageable. Engineering teams can spend more time improving core technology instead of recreating it.
Eventually the value moves from the individual product to the ecosystem around it.
That is what IKEA's journey makes me think about.
IKEA made well-designed furniture accessible by redesigning the system around furniture.
ENVO has an opportunity to do something different, but philosophically related: make practical electric mobility more accessible by removing unnecessary size, weight and complexity from the vehicles we use every day.
We are still early in that journey.
But the direction is becoming clearer.
Build the right-sized vehicle. Share the strongest systems underneath. And make each new product strengthen the whole ENVO ecosystem rather than simply making the catalogue bigger.
